TEREZIN LEGACY ENDURES THROUGH DANCE
By Stacey Menchel Kussel
“I am a child of survivors, so I think about the Holocaust every day,” said Carolyn Dorfman at the recent “In the Spirit of Terezín Artists” dance showcase at the 92nd Street Y. “My family’s trauma and triumph comes out in my dances. It is impossible to escape it.”
Dorfman’s “Cat’s Cradle” was one of seven pieces presented in the program on January 20, commemorating the artists of the Terezín concentration camp. The performance was part of a five-week series, “Will to Create, Will to Live: The Culture of Terezín,” which continues through February 16. (Download Full PDF)

By Alexander Trowbridge
Edgartown School, Martha’s Vineyard

Modern Choreographers Are Exploring Their Heritage, Finding Inspiration For New Works In The Holocaust And Beyond
By Susan Josephs
“For years, Dorfman, a New Jersey-based choreographer and a child of Holocaust survivors, had focused on depicting pain when creating works related to Jewish life. ‘The Holocaust connected me to Judaism,’ she says. ‘But when I looked at my kids, I saw that death alone is not going to keep them connected to their heritage.’ Dorfman’s epiphany resulted in “Mayne Mentshn”, a work about pre-Hitler European Jewish life, postwar immigration, and assimilation in America.” … (Download full PDF)

An Innovative Program Shows Students How Dances Are Created
By Peggy McGloane
F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, Drew University, Madison
“Want to learn how something works? Take it apart. That’s the theory choreographer Carolyn Dorfman applies in her innovative education program, “Backstage Pass”, a performance workshop that provides students with the opportunity to observe modern dance and learn how it is created.” “Backstage Pass” engages in a kind of movement improvisation, as Dorfman and her eight member company work with school groups to help them understand dance and choreography… (Download Full PDF)
