NJ SummerDance 2009
August 17th-21st
Kean University (Union, NJ)

A unique week-long immersion into the art and processes of contemporary dance with CDDC!

For ages 12 through adult, beginners through advanced, this inter-generational dance-lover’s dream includes master classes in modern dance technique, repertory, composition, various dance styles, ethnic dance forms, and dance related fields including video, film, dance criticism, and more. Culminating in a performance by CDDC and participants for the community at large, SummerDance allows you into the world of dance as never before!

Schedule:

Monday through Friday 9:30am-4:30 pm, students will be immersed in modern technique, repertory and composition classes with the professional artists of CDDC learning to create and perform.

Each day a featured artist will teach a master class/workshop followed by Dance Dialogues, a brief recap of the day with artists and participants.

At the conclusion of the residency, the participants and CDDC’s professional dancers will perform work explored, learned, and created for friends, family and the public.

In Class:

CDDC’s class structure is based on technically demanding work that challenges dancers to balance their own individuality and the work of the ensemble. With an emphasis on center-driven movement, weight transfer, breath phrasing, musicality and strong technique; dancers are given a class that develops the body, mind and spirit. The teaching artists will draw from CDDC repertory and students will learn, perform and create in the style of the work.

Faculty:

“As an artist, my work is about people and life experience. As a company we celebrate our heritages, legacies, diversity and, most importantly, our common humanness. At the core, our work is about dance as a universal language and a metaphor for the delicate balance between the individual and the community”. – Carolyn Dorfman, Artistic Director/ Choreographer

CDDC Company Members:
Kyla Barkin, Mica Bernas, Jacqueline Dumas, Rob Fernandez, Jennifer Jones, Aaron Selissen, David (Chien Hui) Shen, Mark Taylor, Sarah Wagner, Anna Woolf, Jon Zimmerman

Contemporary/Dancing with the Spirit:
Led by Jamel Gaines, founder and artistic director of Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, this workshop explores the African American aesthetic. Infusing all forms of technique (ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and African) together with body movement to meet the artist where they are and then take them to new height. He graduated from SUNY Purchase, received scholarships from the The Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and, in 2004, was presented with a Teacher Recognition Award by the Presidential Scholars in the Arts Committee and was also honored by the President of the United States at the Kennedy Center.
