Master Classes/ Guest Artists

Tuesday: Irish Dance with Timothy Kochka
Now in his first season with CDDC, Tim is both a contemporary dancer and Irish Dance Champion. Tim has the distinction of winning the World Irish Dance Championships twice, the All Ireland Championships three times and has toured extensively in Broadway’s Riverdance and The Pirate Queen throughout North American and Asia. Tim’s class will introduce the origins and history of Irish dance and explore the soft shoe (balletic) and hard shoe (rhythmic) techniques.

Tuesday & Wednesday: Pilates with Jon Zimmerman
Currently in his 11th season with CDDC, Jon is a superb artist/performer and experienced teacher of Pilates. He studied Pilates with master teacher Fran Lehan, and for the past 10 years he has refined his approach while teaching this beautifully connected form of exercise. Jon understands the physical and artistic needs of the dancer and the care of the body to increase proper function and longevity. This class will explore the fundamentals of Pilates mat work including the areas of neutral pelvis, cervical articulation, breathing and other aspects of proper alignment and function.

Wednesday: Post-African Contemporary Dance with Reggie Wilson
Artistic Director of Reggie Wilson/ Fist & Heel Performance Group, Reggie draws from the movement languages of the blues, slave and spiritual cultures of Africans in the Americas and combines them with post-modern elements and his own personal movement style to create what he now calls “post-African/ Neo-HooDoo Modern dances.” A nationally and internationally renown artist, his contemporary movement class utilizes source
materials, elements and movement languages from cultures of the Southern U.S., the Caribbean and Southern, Western and Central Africa.

Thursday: Tai Chi Chuan with David (Chien Hui) Shen
In his 7th season with CDDC, David is a native of Taiwan and a senior member of CDDC. A gold medal winner in Martial Arts with a focus on Tai Chi Chuan, he has toured internationally performing with the Taipei Folk Dance Troupe of Taiwan and other professional companies. This class focuses on the form and stylized meditative exercise of this ancient art form. David emphasizes the moving form and the way movements are derived from nature’s inhabitants and the slow, graceful and smooth transitions between them.

Thursday: Kathak Dance with Parul Shah
Artistic Director of Parul Shah Dance Company, Parul is an internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer and choreographer. Her work is expanding the classical Indian dance medium beyond cultural boundaries and has been presented in Asia, Europe, and U.S.A. Parul preserves the form’s aesthetic integrity while developing a unique vocabulary with the Kathak tradition itself. Her classes explore the practical and theoretical aspects of the dance form while building upon the dance form’s storytelling roots with themes that are of relevance today.

Every Day: Dance Dialogues with Carolyn Dorfman & NJSummerDance Faculty
A daily forum for discussions on dance, choreography, careers, professional concerns and more. Dynamic and informal, these conversations are shaped by the art, classes, events and, ultimately, the thoughts, questions and ideas of the NJSummerDance 2010
community.
